President
Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of the Treasury
Tim Geithner meet Wednesday with business leaders to discuss ways to
avoid the "fiscal cliff" and keep the economy growing. The group
includes Frank Blake of The Home Depot, Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs
Group, Joe Echeverria of Deloitte, Muhtar Kent of Coca Cola and Marissa
Mayer of Yahoo.
Obama delivers remarks earlier in
the day at an event with middle class Americans who would see their
taxes go up if Congress fails to extend the expiring George W. Bush-era
tax cuts.
The tax cuts, set to end Jan. 1, and deep spending cuts, scheduled to go into effect Jan. 2, make up the fiscal cliff.
Members of the Campaign to Fix
the Debt, including Erskine Bowles, former co-chair of the National
Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, will be on Capitol Hill
on Wednesday for meetings with House Speaker John Boehner and Republican
leadership, and with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic
leadership. The mission: Urge member members of Congress to reach a deal
on avoiding the fiscal cliff during the lame duck session.
And that's not the extent of the
fiscal cliff talk on Wednesday. Back at the White House, Vice President
Biden will meet with the AFL-CIO Executive Council for talks on deficit
reduction and tax cuts.
And then there is this: First
lady Michelle Obama will welcome military families to the White House on
Wednesday for the first viewing of the 2012 holiday decorations. This
year's White House Blue Room Christmas Tree pays tribute to armed forces
and features ornaments decorated by children living on U.S. military
bases all over the world.
And this: Minnesota Democratic
Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken will host a remembrance event marking
the 10th anniversary of the plane crash that killed Sen. Paul
Wellstone, his wife, their daughter, and three campaign staffers.
