Women employed in various companies and organisations in the country have been challenged to be confident when executing their duties at the workplace so as to bring changes to themselves and the surrounding communities.
The challenge was thrown recently by University of Dar es Salaam don Chriss Mauki when addressing a Women Network Forum (WNF) meeting, an organ within Barclays Bank Tanzania.
“There is a need for women to be confident when executing their duties at their workplace because there are so many challenges facing them,” he said.
Mauki, who was invited as an inspirational speaker to the forum, told the bank's female employees that they must work hard to emancipate themselves from being vulnerable to the gender stereotype.
“You must have courage to grow,” he said, adding: “In many institutions women employees are in a good number but very few are in decision-making posts. You have to ask, why? The answer is: you lack confidence and self-esteem.”
The lecturer, who is also a professional counsellor, said women were also affected by the influence of their backgrounds, lack of enthusiasm and intrusive motivation.
He cited the example of some women who do not even bother to think big simply because they were brought up believing that big thoughts were reserved for men.
“So, in order to make an impact, something which is important, you have to boost your self-confidence, you must know what you want in life and have passion to get it,” he said.
He quoted George Elliot who said, “You are never late to become a person you wanted to be,” and John Barrymore's qip, “You are never old until when regrets overshadow your dreams,” to stress his point.
