What to look for in a business partner by Eric Kinoti

Many young people think that partnerships are all about money, but there are various characteristics you should look out for in a partner.

These are top five things you should look out for in the person you entering into a partnership with.

1. Shared vision and goals:

First and foremost, you must have the same vision with the person you want to partner with. Even if he brings to the table a billion dollars and you don’t share the same vision and goals with you, you will not go far. He must believe in your idea, he/ must be someone who believes in your abilities and respects the goals and targets you have set out for the company. What do you see when you look into the future, do you both see the same thing or everyone has his/her own translation and opinion?

2. Good work ethic and open to criticism.

This should go without saying — your business partner needs to work as hard as you do, and should be pushing you to give your all to the success of the new venture. If someone’s past track record says they’re lazy or unenthusiastic after a time, look elsewhere. You don’t want to have to pick up anyone’s slack, particularly your partner’s. Sometimes both of you will come up with ideas that are not good ideas. Choose a business partner who values others’ input, no matter from who in the company, and is not stubborn or will not take constructive criticism personally

3. Trust

This is non-negotiable. It also needs to be unreserved and unambiguous. It’s easy to say, “Sure, I trust this person. They don’t lie, steal or cheat.” But it needs to go way deeper than that. Do you trust them to make the call on a tax issue? What if you’ve disagreed about the topic in question on more than one occasion and never came up with a mutually satisfactory answer? Do you trust them enough to tell them how you really feel about the stunt they pulled at a client meeting? Do you trust them to forgive you if you make a huge, embarrassing mistake?

Think carefully about whether this person has always demonstrated respect for others, including people they don’t like. Are they fair and reasonable in day-to-day negotiations? How do they handle political or religious conversations? Do you believe them when they say they are sorry?

4. Compatible communication styles

If one person wants to talk it all out, and the other person just wants to move on without processing, it’s going to be tough to get through the kinds of conversations you need to have as business partners. You should have great communication skills in that it will apply to anyone involved in the business, including employees. As partners, you’ll need to keep each other up-to-date on all things business related. The last thing you want is to be left in the dark and upset with the end results, so make sure your partner is transparent and able to communicate well — this will help in getting investors on board too.

5. A good rapport with others and Great Networks

Your business partner needs to be a people person. If they have a good rapport with others, whether it be past employers, employees, or business partners, then they know to manage and work with other people. Plus, those past connections can turn into new clients for your burgeoning enterprise. You should also look for someone who is well connected and has business links in many places. Your net worth equals your networks.

According to the dictionary, an entrepreneur is a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. It also defines a business person as a person engaged in commercial or industrial business and or someone involved in business, where in particular undertaking of activities, commercial or industrial, for the purpose of generating revenue from a combination of human, financial, and physical capital.

For me an Entrepreneur, in the purest sense, is the person who identifies a need—any need—and fill it. It’s a primordial urge, independent of product, service, industry or market. Entrepreneurship is about the future and sustainability, an entrepreneur identifies a gap and creates a lasting solution and not just for money but for the future generations benefit and sustainability.

On the other hand, a business person is that person who identifies a weakness and capitalizes in that just to make profits. For example a typical business person is that who while in a pub drinking and discussing stuff, notices another person is doing well in what he/she is doing and rushes to do it without doing any research or getting to know the hurdles involved. who opens a butchery near another does that because he knows probably customers are complaining about the other butchery’s services. He gets into the business to make money. And that the primary principle of a business person.

I encourage people to follow the entrepreneurship journey because it has a lot to offer. You may not get money immediately, but trust me the values and lessons you learn are priceless. I can assure you, all the entrepreneurs I know are very persistent, courageous, risk takers and patient.

I will point out a few. ..

Churchil is is one entrepreneur who has built his empire around comedy. He identified a gap and commercialized it. He bring joy to the living room, to the young and to the old. It is his talent. It’s something he can do even without a pay if he chooses to, but today he earns from it. He has invested in upcoming comedians too. He mentors them and makes them stars. He gives people a platform to shine. That’s entrepreneurship.

Kaweru Dennis of La Giacca, a very young Fashion-preneur identified a gap in suit making for the young achievers who want to be trendy and official at the same time. He opted to quit working for Stanchart Bank to follow his dream and to do something that gives him satisfaction. He has capitalized in his talent to earn from it. He makes good suits always in fashion.

Wesley Thomas Owiti Okoth of Bows and Tie is another Fashion-preneur . This is one person who gave young entrepreneurs to network in an event that they appreciate professionalism with a wealth of creative concepts and innovative ideas.

Mwenda Thuranira, The founder of Myspace Properties. He identified a gap in real-estate management in Mombasa and now he is the leading consultant in real estate issues. You can even call him a real estate guru.

Danson Muchemi N, Is a TechPrenuer, Google Award winner in Finance innovation. He is the Founder of Jambo Pay, the company that is collecting revenue for Nairobi County Government and a couple of others.

The list is endless, but one thing you should know is that all they entrepreneurs started small, they had many hurdles on their way but they were hard working and patient enough to work towards a break through.

In the line of making Entrepreneurship more attractive and the way to go, I am organizing An All Entrepreneurs boot camp, an event that we can all come and share our experiences and learn from each other. We also have a Young CEO Consortium where will be having sessions with the upcoming entrepreneurs, the young guys who have the idea but don’t have the capital to fund it or that guy who has Ksh 20,000 and want to start a business. Carson: 'The heart of the matter is not guns'

“The heart of the matter is the heart,” he said, “the heart and soul of people.”

“You know, this young man didn’t wake up yesterday and suddenly turn into a maniac,” Carson said of Dylann Storm Roof, 21, the suspect in Wednesday night’s shooting.

“Clearly, there have been things in his background, in his upbringing that led to the type of mentality that would allow him to do something like this,” he added.

“And one of the things that I think that we really need to start concentrating on in this country is once again instilling the right kinds of values, particularly in our young people.”

Reports emerged on Friday that Roof had confessed to the attack at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The massacre there on Wednesday night left nine dead, including Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a South Carolina state senator.

Carson urged Americans on Thursday to focus on their similarities rather than their differences in the wake of the shooting.

“It’s destroying our nation,” said Carson of America’s cultural divides.

“You know, we have a war on women, race wars, income wars, age wars, religious wars. Anything you could imagine, we have a war on it,” he said. “And we’re giving people a license to hate people who disagree with them.”

“Well, I hope that we, the American people, can come to the understanding that we are not each other’s enemies,” Carson added.

“The enemies are those who are stoking the flames of division, trying to divide us into every category and weakening us as a society.”

Roof allegedly uttered racial epithets before opening fire on congregants at Emanuel AME on Wednesday evening.

Carson argued on Thursday that the incident should not prevent Americans from seeking greater harmony.

“You know, we have succumbed to the purveyors of division in all those different categories, including race,” he said. 

“And it’s going to be up to us the people to begin the focus on the positive things, on the things that we have in common, and stop listening to those who stoke the fires of division,” Carson said.
